Two-Time Defending Champ Moeller, Unbeaten Elder Look To Keep Rolling

Two-time defending Greater Catholic League South Division champion Moeller and Elder, off to its best start in four years, look to remain unbeaten as the league schedule opens with a pair of matches Tuesday night.

Moeller (3-0-2), which has not suffered a league defeat since October 11, 2016 when the Crusaders were beaten by La Salle, 3-0, hosts the Lancers in the GCL South opener for both teams at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Gerry Faust Athletic Complex on Moeller’s Montgomery Road campus.

Elder (4-0-0), which remained unbeaten with a 4-2 victory against Colerain last Saturday, travels to meet St. Xavier in the other league match at 7 p.m. Tuesday.  St. Xavier won both meetings between the two schools last season, winning 1-0 and 4-2, respectively.

Moeller, which advanced to the Ohio Division I state final last year before falling, 1-0, in overtime to Medina, is playing outstanding defense again so far this season.  The Crusaders, who did not allow a single goal in seven postseason matches to advance to the title game in 2018, have given up three goals in five matches – including a 0-0 draw against Mason and a 2-2 tie at Lakota East last Tuesday.  Moeller posted its second shutout on Saturday in a 4-0 win against Sycamore.

La Salle (1-3-1), after opening with a 7-0 win against Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy, has not won in its last four matches – the latest a 1-1 tie against Oak Hills last Saturday.  The Lancers are now playing all of their home matches on campus at Lancer Stadium.

Elder began the 2015 season with four straight victories and 7-0-1 record in its first eight matches before suffering a 2-1 loss to St. Xavier,.  The Panthers have outscored their first four opponents by a combined 11-3 score.  Elder finished the 2015 season with a 14-2-4 record and won three postseason matches before being eliminated by Mason, 5-2.  Elder tied St. Xavier that year for the GCL South crown, with each team finishing 2-1-3 against league foes.

The Panthers’ first three wins this season were against Anderson, 3-1; Oak Hills, 2-0; and Fairfield, 2-0.  St. Xavier (1-2-2) has played a rugged early season schedule.  The Bombers have scored more than one goal in one of their first five matches, that coming last Thursday in a 4-1 home win against Sycamore.
