Elder, Moeller Record Interstate Shutout Road Victories

Elder and Moeller traveled to Kentucky for Saturday matches, and both teams returned to Cincinnati after posting shutout wins against solid competition.  St. Xavier was the other Greater Catholic League South Division team in action over the weekend, falling at home to Mason.

Elder ventured to Park Hills, Ky. and posted a 2-0 win at Covington Catholic, the Panthers’ fifth victory in their last six matches.  Senior Connor Ammon, the GCL South leader in both goals (10) and points (24), scored twice for Elder (9-2-0), while junior keeper Kyle Dressman was in goal to record the shutout.  Elder is ranked No. 3 behind Moeller and Mason in the latest rankings of the Southwest Ohio High School Soccer Coaches Association, with St. Xavier, a third GCL South member, at No. 6 in the poll.

Moeller (8-1-2) is back on track after suffering its first loss in two-plus seasons to a Cincinnati school (2-1 to Elder on September 3), winning its third consecutive match – this time taking down nationally ranked Louisville Trinity on the road behind a goal from junior Kade Tepe off an assist from senior Jeremy Ryan.

It is the second consecutive year that Moeller hit the road and posted a win against a ranked team (Trinity is No. 22 in the latest MaxPreps poll).  Last season, Moeller beat No. 9 Olentangy Liberty, 2-1, in Greater Columbus.  The Crusaders wound up at No. 21 a year ago and earned a trip to the Division I state title game.  Four freshmen played against Trinity, with JD Marshall playing the most minutes.

St. Xavier (5-4-2), locked in a three-way tie atop the league standings heading into the second half of GCL South play, fell at home to Mason, 2-0.  The Bombers have now lost  consecutive matches to the top ranked teams, Moeller and Mason, after putting together a five-match winning streak.  St. Xavier fell to the Crusaders, 2-1, last Tuesday at the Xavier University Soccer Complex.

Elder, Moeller and St. Xavier are tied for the GCL South lead heading into Tuesday’s matches.  Elder hosts St. Xavier at 7 p.m. at the Panther Athletic Complex, while Moeller travels to La Salle’s Lancer Stadium for a 7:15 p.m. match.  La Salle did not play over the weekend.  There’s little doubt that Elder-St. X II can be any more exciting than the first time the two teams met on September 3 at St. X, a match the Bombers won after trailing 1-0 late – scoring the final two goals, including the game-winner by junior John Schaeper in the final seconds.
