Elder Heads To Piqua Friday; La Salle Set To play In Sidney

The Ohio High School Athletic Association announced sites Sunday afternoon for this weekend’s semifinals of the OHSAA Football State Tournament, which includes two members of the Greater Catholic League South Division.  Elder, the Region 4 champion, will oppose Region 2 winner Springfield in the Division I semifinals at 7 p.m. Friday at Piqua’s Alexander Stadium.  Region 8 champion La Salle is scheduled to face unbeaten Toledo Central Catholic, the Region 7 winner, in the DII semifinals at 7 that same night at Sidney Memorial Stadium.

The two GCL South teams are one win away from advancing to the OHSAA State Football Championships to be held December 5-7 at Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium in Canton.  The dates and times of each of the seven divisional state finals will be announced Sunday.

Elder (11-2) earned its first state semifinal appearance since winning back-to-back regional titles in 2008 and 2009.  The Panthers advanced with a 28-21 victory against Colerain last Friday at Mason High School, rallying from a seven-point halftime deficit behind two passing and two rushing touchdowns from senior quarterback Matthew Luebbe – the GCL South Co-Player of the Year.  Elder has won three straight and eight of its last nine, the lone blemish during that span coming to La Salle, 27-25, on the road in the regular-season finale.  Springfield (12-1), the Greater Western Ohio Conference American Division champion, is riding an 11-game winning streak.  The Wildcats’ lone loss this season came in week two, 16-12, to Fairfield – which advanced to the regional semifinals.

La Salle (11-2) is making its fourth semifinal appearance in six years, having made it there three straight years from 2014 to 2016 when the Lancers went on to win DII state titles in each of those years.  La Salle has been impressive in the postseason, outscoring its three state playoff opponents by a combined 122-15 score – including a 45-8 win against Harrison in last Friday’s regional final.  However, to advance, La Salle will have to knock off a Toledo Central Catholic (13-0) team that enters the game unbeaten after defeating Lewis Center Olentangy, 46-14, in its regional final.  Since 2014, La Salle has compiled a 20-1 record in the state playoffs – the lone loss coming in the 2017 regional final to Winton Woods, 35-14.  The Lancers did not qualify for the postseason a year ago.

All state semifinal playoff sites will feature presale online ticketing via OHSAA.com. Fans are encouraged to purchase tickets in advance, as participating schools keep a portion of presale ticket revenue.
