La Salle Posts Big Win at CovCath; St. Xavier Wins Fourth Straight

It has been a solid start to the basketball season for members of the Greater Catholic League South Division, as the four teams have combined to record a 11-4 record against non-league competition the first three weeks of games.  Here is a look at the seasons to date for the GCL South, including games played this weekend and what is up next for each team heading into the holidays:

La Salle Wins At CovCath – The Lancers are off to a 4-0 start following an impressive 55-46 victory at highly regarded Covington Catholic last Friday in Park Hills, Ky.  La Salle (4-0) jumped out to a 25-18 halftime advantage and wound up with three players in double figures – led by 15 from senior guard Jaylen Lemons, who had two of his team’s three three-point goals.  Senior Jeff Queen Jr. added 13 and junior Ayden Schneider chipped in 10 for La Salle, which has outscored its first four opponents by an average of 25 points.  The Lancers travel to Lakota West for a 7:30 p.m. game Tuesday.

Moeller Starts New Streak – The Crusaders suffered their first loss in two years a week ago, falling to Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary, 64-59, in Northeast Ohio in a rematch of last year’s Division I state final.  But Moeller – which reeled off 50 consecutive wins and consecutive DI state titles the last two seasons – hopes to start a new streak after posting an 83-29 victory against Flagler-Palm Coast from Florida.  Senior guard Max Land led the Crusaders with 18 points, while junior forward Alex Williams added 17 as the Crusaders jumped to a 28-3 lead after one quarter and shot 61 percent (31-of-51) from the field.  Moeller (2-1) travels to Chillicothe at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

Elder Working Into Season – The Panthers have been solid in the early season, despite tipping off missing five of their players who were finishing up a lengthy postseason run in football that earned the schools a runner-up finish in DI nine days ago.  Elder (1-2) lost a close game against Hamilton Badin, 54-51, last night after defeating Winton Woods, 59-48, one night earlier at home.  The Panthers opened their season with a hard-fought 54-42 setback to Huntington Prep from West Virginia, playing just 15 hours after the state final in Canton, as part of the Griffin Elite Prep School Classic at BB&T Arena on the campus of Northern Kentucky university.  Up next for Elder is a home game against Fairfield at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

St. Xavier Streak At Four – The Bombers opened the season with close back-to-back losses against members of the Greater Miami Conference, Princeton and Lakota East.  Since then, though, St. Xavier (4-2) has reeled off four straight wins under first-year coach Mike Naszka – the latest a 68-31 victory at Roger Bacon Saturday night behind 18 points from junior guard Kobe Rodger. Senior Danny Greive added 10 points, while senior Hank Thomas had eight points, seven rebounds, five steals and three assists.  St. Xavier plays next at West Clermont at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.
