Duncomb, Land Lead Crusaders In Final of Blue Star HS Invitational

Moeller recorded its third impressive win in four days Monday night, getting a combined 30 points and 16 rebounds from Logan Duncomb and Max Land in a convincing 53-33 victory against St. Andrews Episcopal from Potomac, Md. in the finals of the National Championship bracket of the Blue Star High School Invitational played at the Rock Hill Sports & Event Center in Rock Hill, S.C.

Duncomb, a 6-foot-9 junior forward who scored 42 points and grabbed 25 rebounds in the three Blue Star Invitational games, had 16 and nine, respectively, in the title game.  Land, a 6-4 senior guard who had 41 points and 27 rebounds in the tournament, scored 14 to go along with seven rebounds against the previously unbeaten St. Andrews Episcopal.  Moeller won its three tournament games against teams from three different states – Georgia, North Carolina and Maryland – by an average of 26.2 points.

In Monday’s final, Moeller outscored its opposition in every quarter.  The Crusaders held a significant 42-16 rebounding edge, also getting eight rebounds from junior Alex Williams and seven from junior Will McCracken.  Through the first nine games this season, Moeller has the league’s top three scorers in Land (16.9), Williams (15.8) and Duncomb (14.8).  Duncomb leads the GCL South in rebounding, averaging 8.7 per game, while Land is third, at 6.3.

To say the first month of the season has been an impressive one for the four Greater Catholic League teams would be an understatement.  Moeller, La Salle and St. Xavier enter 2020 with each having won seven consecutive games, while Elder has won four straight and five of its last six – adding up to a current 26-game winning streak between the four teams.  La Salle is still unbeaten, at 7-0, while Moeller’s lone defeat is to Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary, 64-59, in Akron on December 7 in a rematch of last season’s Division I state final.  Moeller has won 57 of its last 58 games, including the last two DI state crowns.  The combined record of the GCL South teams is 27-5.
