Panthers Tip Off New Year With Rare Thursday night Game

Senior center Owen Spencer scored a game-high 16 points, while junior guard Dominic Cantrella added 11, including the go-ahead basket, to lead Turpin to a 46-43 victory against Elder in a non-conference basketball game last night at Turpin High School.  The victory keeps Turpin undefeated and snaps a four-game winning streak for Elder – which tipped off the New Year part of a combined 26-game winning streak for the four Greater Catholic League South Division teams.

Elder (5-3) was led by 12 points, including three three-point goals, from sophomore forward Andrew Harp.  Senior guard Matthew Luebbe added nine and junior guard J.T. Miller chipped in eight for the Panthers, who led 14-13 at the end of the first quarter.  Turpin (9-0) moved in front and maintained a five-point advantage at halftime, 22-17, and at the end of the third quarter, 34-29.  Elder is off tonight but returns to action against Northwest Saturday night.  Tipoff is 7:30 p.m. at The Pit in Price Hill.

La Salle (7-0) and St. Xavier (7-2) tip off 2020 with non-conference home games tonight.  The Lancers host Walnut Hills at 7:30 tonight before traveling to face GCL Co-Ed member Roger Bacon at that same Saturday.  The Bombers, who have won seven consecutive games, host Purcell Marian at 7:30 tonight.  Moeller (8-1), fresh off its championship at the Blue Star High School Invitational in Rock Hill, S.C. over the holiday, travels to face Centerville at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.  The Crusaders are riding a seven-game winning streak.  The three schools have won a combined 21 straight games.
