Lancers Equal Best Start Since  2011-12; Bombers On Roll

La Salle and St. Xavier opened 2020 with impressive home non-conference victories Friday night, each extending its current winning streaks to eight games and improving the combined record of the four Greater Catholic League South Division basketball teams to 29-6 against an arduous early-season schedule.   The 8-0 start by La Salle equals the best opening to a season since the Lancers tipped off the 2010-11 and 2011-12 by winning eight straight games and went on to finish 26-2 and 21-2 overall in those two seasons, respectively.

La Salle remained undefeated with a 65-51 win against Walnut Hills last night at La Salle, getting 19 points, four rebounds and three steals from senior forward Derek Eddings.  He was joined in double figures by senior guard Jeff Queen Jr., who added 17 points and four rebounds, and senior guard Jaylen Lemons, who chipped in  10 and three, respectively.  The Lancers trailed 12-11 after one quarter but came alive to outscore Walnut Hills (8-3), 16-10, in the second quarter.  La Salle put the game away in the final eight minutes, scoring 23 points to record its seventh double-digit win this season.

St. Xavier earned its eighth win in a row with a 77-46 victory against GCL Co-Ed member Purcell Marian at St. Xavier.  The Bombers’ lone setbacks this season are to Princeton and Lakota East in their first two games.   Junior guard Kobe Rodgers led St. Xavier (8-2) with a team-high 19 points, while senior forward Hank Thomas added 11 for the Bombers – who scored 47 points in the first half and built a 22-point lead at intermission.  St. Xavier, which has not lost since falling in its first two games by a total of eight points, had 11 players score in the game, including six with seven or more points.  The Bombers also nailed five three-point goals.

St. Xavier is the lone GCL south team that does not play today.  Elder, coming off a 46-43 road setback at unbeaten Turpin on Thursday night, hosts Northwest at 7:30 p.m. at The Pit in Price Hill.  Moeller (8-1), which has won seven consecutive games, opens its 2020 schedule by traveling up Interstate 75 to face Centerville at 7:30 p.m.

The first full night of GCL South game is set for next Friday, with Elder scheduled to play at St. Xavier and Moeller slated to travel to La Salle.  Both games tip off at 7:30 p.m.  Moeller will enter its GCL South opener riding a 19-game winning streak in the league; the Crusaders last loss to a league team on February 5, 2016 – a 48-43 setback against Elder on the road.  Moeller has won the league three GCL South titles with an unblemished 6- league record each season.
