Big Finish Carries La Salle; Moeller, Elder Post Double-Digit Wins

The four Greater Catholic League South Division basketball teams tipped off 2020 the same way they ended the previous year, by posting an unbeaten weekend after La Salle, Moeller and Elder all recorded non-conference victories Saturday night.  La Salle and St. Xavier were both victorious Friday, giving the GCL South a 5-0 record over the two days.  The four teams combined to go a perfect 7-0 on December 27-28.

Overall, the GCL South teams are a combined 32-6.

La Salle (9-0) remained unbeaten with a 52-40 victory against GCL Co-Ed member Roger Bacon last night on the road.  The game was tied after each of the first three quarters, before La Salle exploded to score 25 points in the final eight minutes to keep its perfect record.   Junior forward Jeff Queen Jr. scored seven of his 11 points in the fourth quarter, while junior forward Ayden Schneider had five of his team-best 13 in the final eight minutes.

The victory gives the Lancers their best start to a season since going 8-0 to begin both the 2010-11 and 2011-12 seasons, finishing 26-2 and 21-2 overall, respectively, those two seasons.  The Lancers have one more game, hosting East Central, Ind. at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, before opening their GCL South schedule Friday night.    La Salle will attempt to hand Moeller its first league loss in more than three seasons.  Tipoff is 7:30 at La Salle.

Moeller (9-1), the two-time defending Division I state champion, extended its winning streak to eight games with a 57-46 win at Centerville on Saturday.  Junior forward Alex Williams led the Crusaders with 19 points, hitting 7-of-10 field goals, including all three three-point attempts, and converting both of his free-throw attempts.

Four other players – Max Land, Will McCracken, Logan Duncomb and Aidan Turner – each scored eight points for Moeller – which made 23-of-37 field goals (62.2 percent) and converted all seven free throws.  Moeller, which does not play until traveling to La Salle on Friday, has won 19 straight league games dating back to February 2016.

Elder (6-3) rebounded from a 46-43 loss at undefeated Turpin on Thursday night to post a 63-51 win against Northwest last night at The Pit in Price Hill.  Junior David Larkins led a balanced Elder offense, finishing with 13 points, while senior Matthew Luebbe and sophomore Andrew Harp added 12 each as Elder was in command from the outset – holding leads of 16-7 and 32-19 after the first quarter and at halftime, respectively.

St. Xavier did not play Saturday.  The Bombers – who have won eight straight games – will host Elder at 7:30 p.m. Friday on the opening night of play in the GCL South.  League games are scheduled on six consecutive Friday nights through February 7, with each team playing a home-and-home series to determine the GCL South champion.
