No. 1 Moeller Roll Continues; Elder Wins In Greater Dayton
Senior forward Hank Thomas scored a game-high 21 points, and St. Xavier used a third quarter to erase an eight-point halftime deficit and record a 55-49 win against Covington Catholic in an interstate basketball game Tuesday night at St, Xavier High School’s Berning Gymnasium.  The loss snapped a 17-game winning streak for CovCath, Northern Kentucky’s top-ranked team that had not lost since falling to Greater Catholic League South Division member La Salle, 55-46, way back on December 13 in Park Hills, KY.
Two other GCL South teams posted wins last night, as Moeller – the No. 1-ranked team in Ohio Division I – extended its winning streak to 15 games with a 55-46 victory against Winton Woods at Moeller’s Brisben Family Education Center on its campus, where the Crusaders have won 44 consecutive games.  Elder went on the road to earn a 44-42 triumph at Beavercreek, snapping the Panthers’ three-game skid behind balanced scoring and stingy defense.
La Salle (16-1) did not play Tuesday, as the Lancers gear up for a rematch with Moeller on the road Friday night.  The Crusaders won the first meeting, 45-43, at La Salle just over three weeks ago in the GCL South opener for both teams.  As a result, Moeller has a one-game edge in the league standings heading into the second half of the season and can clinch at least a share of the GCL South title with a win Friday.  Moeller has won or shared the last seven GCL South championships.
St. Xavier (12-4) continues to have a strong season under first-year coach Mike Noszka, though the Bombers fell behind CovCath, 14-8, after one quarter and  31-23 at halftime before coming out of the locker room to outscore the Kentucky state power, 20-8, and take the lead heading into the fourth quarter.
Thomas led all scorers, hitting 8-of-12 field goals and scoring nine in the third quarter, including the first seven of the quarter to bring the Bombers to within one, 31-30.  St. Xavier led by as many as six in the third before CovCath narrowed the gap to 43-39 heading into the final eight minutes. Thomas was joined in double figures by senior guard Avery Wilson, who finished with 10 points. Neil Green led CovCath (18-4) with 15.
Moeller (16-1) got another big game from junior forward Logan Duncomb – who finished with 20 points and 12 rebounds, recording his seventh double-double of the season.  Senior guard Max Land added 12 points, and junior forward Alex Williams chipped in 10 for the Crusaders, who had a rare off-shooting night that included just 3-of-16 from three-point range.
Elder (8-8) evened its record and got back on the winning track.  The Panthers, who made the trek to Beavercreek having dropped their last three and five of six, were able to emerge with a win in a game that was close throughout.  The Panthers led by two after one quarter, 11—9, by one at halftime, 21-20, and then by two again, 35-33, after three quarters.  Naturally, two points would be the final margin of victory.  Elder was led by 11 points from junior Tony Walker, while sophomore Andrew Harp added eight and junior David Larkins scored seven.  The Panthers host St. Xavier at 7:30 p.m. Friday at The Pit in Price Hill.
