Panthers Defeat St. Xavier To Win Fourth Title In Five Years

Elder posted victories over defending champion La Salle in the semifinals and host St. Xavier in the final to win the Greater Catholic League  South Division Wrestling Championships held Saturday at St. Xavier High School.  The varsity title was the fourth in five years for Elder, which also won league titles in 2016, 2017 and 2018 before La Salle won last year’s event and went on to finish second behind perennial power Lakewood St. Edward in the Ohio High School Athletic Association Division I Individual State Tournament in Columbus last March.
Elder opened with a 75-6 win against La Salle in the semifinals, while St. Xavier got past Moeller, 43-27, to advance to the final.  Elder then beat St. Xavier, 50-16, to win the title, while Moeller knocked off La Salle, 57-6, in the consolation match.  The Panthers also were victorious in the combined Junior Varsity  Freshman Tournament, finishing with 179 points.  St. Xavier was second with a team score of 176.5, followed by Moeller with a 66 and La Salle with 20.
Up next for the four GCL South teams is the OHSAA Division I Sectional Championships this Friday and Saturday at Lakota East, Lebanon and Middletown high schools  Elder and La Salle will wrestler at Lakota East, while Moeller will compete at Lebanon, and St. Xavier will be among 11 teams competing at Middletown – each hoping to earn a berth in the district meet.  The OHSAA Individual Wrestling State Tournament is set for March 13-15 at the Jerome Schottenstein Center on The Ohio State University campus in Columbus.
