Elder Falls To Anderson In Close Match Played At PAC

Senior Brent Lands scored a pair of goals, with assists on both from senior Lawrence White, and senior Rylan Earl added a third goal as St. Xavier scored three goals in the first 12 minutes of the match and went on to post a 3-0 victory over Lakota East in the Bombers’ season opener Friday night on its home pitch on the school’s North Bend Road campus.

In Friday’s other Greater Catholic League South Division match, Elder was held scoreless in a 1-0 setback to Anderson in the second game of a doubleheader at the Panther Athletic Complex in Price Hill.  Seton, a member of the Girls’ Greater Catholic League and Elder’s sister school, began the night with a 3-1 triumph over Anderson at the PAC in its season opener.

St. Xavier, which finished an impressive 12-6-2 last season, got its first goal early on a feed from White.  Earl was then fouled 10 minutes into play and converted the ensuing penalty kick, and it was White to Lands again just two minutes later that produced the final goal of the match.  The two teams played to a 1-1 draw in the season opener a year ago, and East went on to an outstanding season that took the Thunderhawks all the way to the Division I state semifinals before losing to Olentangy Liberty, 1-0.

The Elder and St. Xavier matches marked the first contact sports played this fall in the GCL South after Ohio Governor Mike DeWine signed an Ohio Department of Health Order earlier this week giving the go-ahead for fall contact sports to begin competition against other schools with restrictions that included limits on the number of spectators that can attend matches among other protocol because of the COVID-19 global pandemic.

Three-time defending GCL South champion Moeller, which is a combined 37-4-5 the last two seasons including a DI state runner-up finish two years ago, kicks off its varsity season at Sycamore at 7 p.m. next Tuesday.  La Salle  under second year coach and 1985 Lancers’ graduate Mike Popejoy, also starts that same evening as the Lancers travel to Little Miami for a match at 7.  Elder and St. Xavier are both back in action, too, with Elder hosting Summit Country Day at 7 Tuesday evening, and St. Xavier staying at home to host Anderson at that same time.
