St. Xavier Remains Unbeaten With Pair Of Shutout Victories

Senior Jason Stiegerwald scored on a header off a corner kick from senior Brent Lands with 24 seconds to play to give St. Xavier a 1-0 victory against Cuyahoga Falls Walsh Jesuit Sunday afternoon in Greater Cleveland, keeping the Bombers unbeaten and giving St. Xavier a sweep of its two weekend opponents.  The Bombers also shut out Toledo St. John’s Jesuit on their home pitch Saturday afternoon, 4-0.

St. Xavier (4-0), which hosts Walnut Hills at 7 tonight in its final tune-up before opening Greater Catholic League South Division play a week from tonight at Elder, has been impressive to begin the season – opening with lopsided wins against Division I state semifinals from last season Lakota East, 3-0, and perennial Eastern Cincinnati Conference power Anderson, 6-1.  The Bombers have outscored its first four opponents, 14-2, recording three shutouts.

Lands is tied for the GCL South lead in goals, with three, and assists, with four.  Teammate Isaiah Neal, a senior, also has three goals, while Bombers’ senior Lawrence White has registered four assists.  Junior Patrick Ahrens and Stiegerwald have each scored two goals, while senior Will Bernhard also has two assets to rank among league leaders.

Two of the other three GCL South teams also were in action last week.  Three-time defending league champion Moeller (0-1-1), which is replacing a wealth of talented graduates, fell to Mason, 2-1, Saturday at the Gerry Faust Athletic Complex on the Crusaders’ Montgomery Road campus. Moeller and Mason played to a draw in the regular season last fall, but the Crusaders were victorious in the postseason, winning 2-1 in OT.

This time, it was another one-goal game.  After Mason took an early 1-0 lead, Moeller sophomore JD Marshall scored at the 24-minute mark to tie the score, 1-1.   Junior Brock Kiper had the assist.  After Mason was awarded a penalty kick just minutes into the second half – and senior captain Sam McKee scored to give the Comets a 2-1 advantage.  Moller is at Lakota West at 7 tonight.

La Salle (1-0-1) played to a scoreless draw at Oak Hills Saturday night.  Up next for the Lancers is a home match tonight against Loveland.  Kickoff is 7:15.  The Lancers open GCL South play with a match at Moeller at 5:30 p.m. Thursday.  Elder(0-1-1)  had the weekend off after opening with a 1-0 home loss to Anderson and then tying Summit Country Day, 1-1, earlier in the week.  The Panthers travel to Sycamore for a 7 p.m. match today at Sycamore Stadium, which is located at Sycamore Junior High School.
