Elder Draws With Lakota West; La Salle, Moeller Have Weekend Off
St. Xavier and Mason, leaders in the Greater Catholic League South Division and Greater Miami Conference soccer standings, respectively, took to the pitch Saturday afternoon in a match that resembled the drama and skills of the postseason – with Mason getting goals from seniors Max Brogan and Nolan Fitz in a 2-1 victory against St. Xavier at Mason High School.
The loss was the first this season for St. Xavier (8-1-1), which entered play with a nine-match unbeaten streak having played to a 1-1 draw at Dublin Coffman a week earlier.   The Bombers are a perfect 3-0 in the GCL South after the first half of the home-and-home league matches.  Mason (9-0-1), which leads the 10-team GMC with a 5-0-0 mark, extended its unblemished streak to 10 matches.
Senior midfielder Isaiah Neal scored the lone goal, his fourth of the season, for St. Xavier – which had outscored its first nine opponents, 25-4.  The Bombers open the second half of GCL South play by hosting Elder at 7 p.m. Tuesday before taking on Cleveland St. Ignatius next Sunday at 3 p.m. at St. Xavier.  The school will play a football-soccer DH with St. Ignatius, hosting the perennial state football power from Northeast Ohio at 5 p.m. Saturday.
Elder (0-6-3, 0-2-1 GCL South) will be looking for its first league and overall win when it meets St. Xavier.  The Bombers won the first meeting, 2-0, earlier this month at the Panther Athletic Complex in Price Hill.  Elder played to a 3-3 draw at Lakota West on Saturday night, getting a pair of goals from senior Andrew Mueller and another tally from senior Jacob Russell.  The Panthers finish the week by traveling to Fort Thomas, Ky. To face Highlands at 1 p.m. Saturday at Tower Park.
La Salle and Moeller had the weekend off, but both return to action Tuesday.  The Lancers (3-5-2, 0-2-1), which defeated Elder, 5-2 last Tuesday for their first league win of the season, host three-time defending GCL South champion Moeller at 7:15 p.m. Tuesday at Lancer Stadium.  La Salle led the Crusaders, 3-0, at halftime in the first meeting earlier this month on the road, but Moeller rallied back to score four second-half goals in the one-goal win.
The Lancers then host Kings at 11:30 a.m. Saturday.
Moeller (2-2-2, 1-1-1), which lost to St. Xavier, 3-0, in its last match, had a busy week.  After traveling to La Salle, the Crusaders head to Loveland for a non-conference match at 7 p.m. Thursday before returning to its Montgomery Road campus to host Lakota East at 3 p.m. Saturday. In a rematch of last year’s Division I regional semifinal that was one by East, 2-1, allowing the Thunderhawks to advance to the state semifinals.
