La Salle-Moeller Final League Game; Elder, St. X Face Tough Competition

These are the final two days of the shortened Ohio High School Athletic Association football regular season, which was shortened to six weeks because of concerns over COVID-19 in order to allow for a revised state playoffs that begins next Friday, which would be week seven of the usual 10—game regular season, and is allowing all teams that want to participate a spot for the first time in the OHHSAA history.

As a result, this is the final weekend of play for the four Greater Catholic League South Division teams.  La Salle (3-2, 1-1 GCL South) is vying to take some positive momentum into the Lancers’ defense of the Division II state championship when it hosts Moeller (1-4, 0-2) in the final league game of the season tonight.  Kickoff is 7 at Lancer Stadium, where La Salle has played just one game this season – a 24-10 loss to St. Xavier back in week two.

Moeller (1-4, 0-2) has played all six of its games on the road.  The Crusaders opened with a come-from-behind 34-17 win at Bishop Hartley in Columbus, but have since lost four straight games to a brutal schedule that includes ranked East Central, Ind., nationally ranked Louisville Trinity, Elder and St. Xavier.   It won’t be much easier against a La Salle team that won last year’s meeting, 41-20, on a big night from senior quarterback Zach Branam, who rushed 19 times for 253 yards and five touchdowns.

Elder (3-2) is vying to become the first GCL South team this season to defeat Indianapolis Cathedral.  Kickoff is set for 7 tonight at Arlington Community School, where Cathedral plays its home games this season.  The Fighting Irish, ranked No 1. In Indiana in all classes by MaxPreps, have already knocked off St. Xavier, 25-22, and then held off La Salle, 37-28, last week at home. Elder beat Cathedral, 38-31, in overtime last season at The Pit.

St. Xavier (3-2), the GCL South regular-season champion, welcomes Cleveland St. Ignatius to Ballaban Field at St. Xavier Stadium for a 5 p.m. kickoff Saturday, the final day of the OHSAA regular season.  The Bombers knocked off Moeller, 43-14, last Friday to clinch its second outright league title in the last four years, are looking to enter the DI state playoffs riding a two-game winning streak.  St. Ignatius enters the game at 0-2 after a delayed start because of COVID-19.
