Lands’ Two Goals Pace St. Xavier; Mueller Scores Hat Trick For Elder

Senior midfielder Brent Lands scored two goals and five of his teammates each added one tally to lead St. Xavier, the Greater Catholic League South Division champion and No. 2 seed in the Southwest sectional / district Division I bracket to a 7-0 victory over Harrison in the second round of the Ohio High School Athletic Association State Boys’ Soccer Tournament last night at Ballaban Stadium at St. Xavier Stadium.   Lands is now second in the league in points scored, with 22.

Elder, like St. Xavier, making its postseason debut last night, went on the road to continue its late-season surge and post a 3-1 victory against defending DI state semifinalist Lakota East in Liberty Township last evening.  The win was the fourth straight for the Panthers, who finished second behind St. Xavier in the league standings after opening the season 0-8-3 in its first 11 matches, many of the early-season setbacks coming by one goal.  Senior Andrew Mueller recorded a hat trick in the match for Elder, while the Panthers’ defense was strong again – having allowed just two goals in the last four matches.

Moeller, the third GCL South team in advance lat night, had its season come to an end with a 2-1 setback at Milford.  The Crusaders, looking for a third straight extended run in the state playoffs, became the second GCL South team to fall to the Eagles this week.   Milford (14-3-1), a member of the Easter Cincinnati Conference, eliminated La Salle with a 3-2 win in Monday’s opening round of sectional play.  Moeller closes its season with a record of 6-8-4.

St. Xavier (12-2-2) advances to its sectional semifinals against Walnut Hills (9-1-0) at 7 p.m. Monday at Princeton High School’s Mancuso Field at Viking Stadium.  Walnut Hills advanced with a 10-0 victory against Goshen last night at Walnut Hills.  The Eagles’ lone blemish this season is a 1-0 loss to Turpin on October 5. St. Xavier is 4-1-1 in its last six matches, the lone defeat to top-ranked Cleveland St. Ignatius, 2-0.

Elder (4-8-3) moves on to oppose Loveland (12-2-3) in its sectional semifinal at 7 p.m. Monday at Sycamore High School.  Loveland, the Eastern Cincinnati Conference co-champion, defeated Mt. Healthy, 9-0, last night.  The Panthers also had a solid run in the postseason last fall, posting three straight wins before falling to Lakota East, 4-2.  Elder beat Loveland and Centerville in the state playoffs last season.
