Elder, St. Xavier Remain Undefeated; Moeller Extends Home Streak

It was a 3-0 Saturday for the Greater Catholic League South Division basketball teams, as Elder and St. Xavier posted non-conference victories to remain undefeated entering the final weeks of December, and Moeller rebounded from its first defeat in more than a year to extend winning streaks on its home court and against teams from Southwest Ohio.  La Salle, the fourth GCL South team, did not have a game scheduled last night.

League teams are now a combined 16-3 against non-league opponents.

Here is a look at the three GCL South games:

Elder 71, Lakota West 58 – The Panthers got a huge night from junior Andrew Harp, who finished with 23 points including seven three-point goals and eight rebounds, including four offensive, to snap Lakota West’s three-game winning streak.  Elder (5-0) is off to its best start since beginning the 2015-16 season a perfect 10-0 before falling at Cooper in Union, Ky., 47-45, in January 5, 2016.

Elder led by one point, 16-15, before expanding the lead to eight at halftime and then 11 points, 55-44, at the end of the third quarter.  Senior JT Miller also was in double figures, with 12 points and two three-pointers.  Senior Michael Keenan added nine points, senior Scott Nieman pitched in eight points and five rebounds, and junior Sean Keller had eight points and five assists.  Junior Drew Busman also added eight points after going 8-of-8 in free throws.

Elder – which has now made 10 or more three-pointers in each of the five games – with attempt to close out 2020 unbeaten when it hosts GCL Co-Ed Division member Roger Bacon at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at The Pit in Price Hill.  The Panthers close the current calendar year with a game at neighborhood rival Western Hills at on December 29.

St. Xavier 69, Summit Country Day 28 – Senior guard Kobe Rodgers led all scorers with 17 points to help the Bombers stay undefeated.  St. Xavier (4-0), which was originally scheduled to play West Clermont on Saturday night, was able to add the Silver Knights for a late afternoon varsity start.  St. Xavier built a 38-18 halftime lead and then outscored Summit, 19-4, in the third quarter.

The Bombers have the week off before playing their final game of 2020, hosting Lakota West at 4:30 p.m. on Monday, December 28 at the school’s Berning Gymnasium.  St. Xavier is off to its best start since opening the 2012-13 by winning its first seven games.  The Bombers finished  15-8 that season, including a 6-4 record in the GCL.

Moeller 71, Centerville 58 – The Crusaders extended two streaks with a victory against previously undefeated Centerville early Saturday evening.  In the process, Moeller (4-1) also avenged its last home loss, a 42-41 setback to the Elks back in February 2015, and increased its unbeaten streak on its Montgomery Road campus to 49 games.

The Crusaders, who have now won 85 in a row against teams from the region, got strong games from seniors Alex Williams and Logan Duncomb.  Williams led all scorers with 25 points, while Duncomb added 22 points and 10 rebounds for his fourth double-double in five games.  Up next for Moeller is a scheduled game against Bellbrook at 7 p.m. Tuesday at home.

La Salle Has Three More – The Lancers, who fell to Centerville in their last game on Friday, are scheduled to play three games between now and the end of the calendar year.  La Salle (2-2) travels to rival Oak Hills at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday and then Turpin a week later on December 29.  The Lancers close out 2020 by hosting Bishop Fenwick at 3 p.m. on December 31.
