League Schools Look To Close Calendar Year In Impressive Fashion

The four Greater Catholic League South Division basketball teams look to continue their impressive early non-conference start in the final week of the calendar year.  League teams are scheduled to play five of the next six days, with Moeller making its annual trek to the prestigious Beach Ball Classic, Elder and St. Xavier vying to remain undefeated, and La Salle looking to carry momentum from its win against Oak Hills into 2021.

Here is a look at the games this week for the four GCL South Teams, in alphabetical order:

Elder – The Panthers (6-0) are off to their best start since opening the 2015-16 season with 10 consecutive victories.  Elder (6-0) has benefited from an up-tempo offense, which has scored 80 or more points in four games, and torrid three-point shooting – which includes 10 or more made three-pointers in every game.  Coach Joe Schoenfeld’s team plays its final game of 2020 on Tuesday, traveling to face neighborhood rival Western Hills at 7:30 p.m.  The Panthers then return to The Pit in Price Hill to tip off the New Year by hosting Turpin at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.  Turpin is the last team to beat Elder, winning 58-54 in overtime last postseason.

La Salle – The Lancers, fresh off a close win against Oak Hills last Tuesday, have three games scheduled between now and Saturday.  La Salle (4-2), led by seniors Justin Lovette and Ayden Schneider, are at Turpin at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday before returning to its campus to host GCL Co-Ed member Bishop Fenwick at 3 p.m. Thursday, then take on neighborhood rival Colerain at 7:30 Saturday night.  The Lancers have been strong against non-league competition during the regular season since a year ago, going 16-0 in 2019-20 and then winning their first two games this season before falling at Walnut Hills, 46-42, earlier this month.

Moeller – The Crusaders are set to challenge some of the top high school programs in the country when they travel to Myrtle Beach, S.C. to participate in the prestigious Beach Ball Classic.  Moeller (5-1) looks to become just the second team from Ohio to win this annual prep hoops showcase since its inception in 1-91, with Lakewood St. Edward finishing atop the field in 2006.  The Crusaders’ lone blemish this season is against Indiana power Lawrence North, 58-57.  Moeller, which has won 33 of its last 34 games, meets hometown Socasteel at 7 Monday night.  The games are being played at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center.  Moeller will play four games In four days.

St. Xavier – The Bombers, like Elder, are looking to remain unbeaten heading into the New Year. St. Xavier (4-0) has scheduled two games between now and 2021, first hosting Lakota West at 4:30 p.m. Monday.  The Bombers will then face a second Greater Miami Conference team in three days when it meets Oak Hills at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday.  St. Xavier is led by senior guard Kobe Rodgers, who is third in the league in scoring (17.5), second in assists (4.5), and leads the GCL South in steals (2.8).  One of two unbeatens in the GCL South, along with Elder, the league is a combined 19-3 against non-league opponents entering play this week.
