La Salle Falls To Bishop Fenwick In Final Seconds To Close Year

Junior Evan Mahaffey scored a team-high 15 points and grabbed five rebounds, while senior Logan Duncomb recorded his sixth double-double of the season with 14 points and 10 rebounds to help lead Moeller to a 56-50 victory against Bishop McLaughlin Catholic from Spring Hill, Fla., Thursday afternoon at the Beach Ball Classic in Myrtle Beach, S.C.  The win earns the Crusaders a 3-1 record and fifth-place finish in the prestigious 16-team prep basketball showcase held this week at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center.

Mahaffey was 7-of-11 from the field and converted his three free-throw attempts for Moeller (8-2), which had strong first and third quarters to post an impressive win – jumping out to a 16-8 advantage in the opening eight minutes and then outscoring the Hurricanes, 19-15, in the third quarter to take an eight-point lead into the final quarter.  Seniors Alex Williams and Aidan Noyes added 12 and 11 points, respectively.

Junior guard Emanuel Sharp scored a game-high 31 points, including 9-of-10 made free throws, for Bishop McLaughlin (10-4).  Moeller’s lone defeat in the Beach Ball Classic was a 53-50 setback to a talented Calvary Christian Academy from Fort Lauderdale, Fla., which advanced to the championship game before falling to Milton, Ga., 70-57, in the event’s final game.  After returning home, Moeller is off until next Friday,  when the Crusaders begin their GCL South title defense by hosting La Salle at 7:30 p.m.

La Salle Falls In Final Seconds – The Lancers were not as fortunate as Moeller in their final game of 2020, as junior Kyle Evans Smith of Bishop Fenwick snapped a 44-44 tie with a jump shot with just 2.6 seconds remaining  to give the GCL Co-Ed member Falcons a 46-44 victory against the Lancers late Thursday afternoon at La Salle.  La Salle had tied the game seconds earlier after trailing 44-42, but Smith’s game-winner gave Fenwick its fourth consecutive victory.

Senior Justin Lovette led La Salle (5-3) with 14 points, and was the lone player in double figures for the Lancers.  Senior Ayden Schneider scored nine points and pulled down a team-best seven rebounds, while seniors DeAgo Brumfield also scored nine and Chase Willis added eight.  Senior center AJ Braun had game highs of 22 points and eight rebounds for Fenwick (6-1).  Up next for La Salle is neighborhood rival Colerain to tip off the New Year, with tipoff set for 7:30 p.m. Saturday at La Salle.

Elder, St. Xavier Tip Off ‘21 – Elder and St. Xavier, which finished December with unbeaten records, look to stay perfect when they tip off the New Year by hosting non-conference opponents Saturday.  Elder (7-0), winning by an average of nearly 30 points a game, attempts to avenge its last loss when it hosts Turpin at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.  The Panthers fell to Turpin in, 58-54, in overtime in the second round of the sectional tournament last season.

Like Elder, St. Xavier (6-0) will face a member of the Eastern Cincinnati Conference when it hosts West Clermont at 4:30 Saturday afternoon.  The Bombers are vying to make it three wins this week, to, having defeated Lakota West and Oak Hills earlier to move to 4-0 against teams from the Greater Miami Conference this season.  After hosting West Clermont, the Bombers travel to  The Pit to face Elder in the GCL South for both at 7:30 next Friday night.

Strong Start For GCL South – It has been a solid start to the beginning of the 2020-21 season for the four GCL South teams.  Elder and St. Xavier finished December unbeaten, while Moeller turned in an impressive showing against nationally regarded teams in the Beach Ball Classic, and La Salle posted a winning record against solid competition.  Overall, the four league teams take a combined 26-5 record into the New Year.  League teams have three more games scheduled against non-conference opponents before beginning the GCL South schedule next Friday.
